Once she's up on stage, it feels like she's peeling her own skin off in front of strangers. What could be more humiliating, more exposing than throwing your art, your body, your voice, your creation out there for people to pick apart? She's been told to be brave, bulletproof but she's fragile as glass, thin skinned, over feeling, wired to bleed at the slightest scratch. Through trial, error and more than a few painful lessons, she's discovered ways to manage the sting of rejection and silence the endless worry over what people might think. Accepting reality has given her a steadier sense of purpose and, surprisingly, peace.
"Fuck me," she muttered, ripping off her mic pack and tossing it at a chair, heading straight for the bottle stashed behind a trunk. "That was shit. Good shit."
