Special Lyrics

the gathering crowd were left in awe
many were seen sporting a gaping maw
three different stories, three different tales
and no way of knowing which stories lies veil

was the king double-crossed by the stranger
while putting his life in grave danger?
did his wife really betray him so?
or was the king lying himself – oh!

was the stranger really as innocent as he claimed
and left by the king and queen to be maimed?
or was he not to be trusted at all
was he bringing about the kingdom’s fall?

was the queen truly a victim of her gender
making the king go forth on a mad bender?
or was this all just an elaborate plan
to get rid of her overbearing man?

which one of the three was the one in the right
and how could this puzzle be solved without a fight?
the older townsfolk remembered a precedent
for when a king themselves could not give judgement

they sent for a judge from an ancient order
who lived quite near to the kingdom’s border
in a few long days he finally arrived
to pass judgement on which two lied

the crowd gathered again to witness this scene
some thought it poetic and some obscene
it was noon on a Sunday that the trial began
the three parties brought to face the old man

he listened to their stories whilst remaining silent
quietly pondering what it all meant
it was clear from the start this was to be hard
but the old judge was determined to play his part
