In those old times, not as oldest that they could claim the title of ancients for themselves, parchments where rare and difficult to get.
Scribes had to wash the ink of old books and then write a new text on their "blank pages" to make new ones.
Why the old ones were discarded and the new ones needed it's a story that should be told in a different time line.

Over time, those ghostly former writings could stubbornness resurface their hidden traces of lines on the surface of the pages of the book claiming back their right for the meaning of their own existence.
Their meaning could be ignored, either you could focus to discover if there was any kind of mystery around -waste of oxygen- or if you have the chance to make a decision on what to do, it can always be postponed.... soon, very soon... or not.
Strange the smell of some old books when you open them, so seeing the meaning of the lines that they contain won't be enough, underneath them, their smell to old, to already known, to something recognizable....or something more., as the perfume of the wild fruits and spices from the glass of red wine that you taste while reading them.
