Reflections of a Bartender #1 – Buck's Fizz
She wasn’t the first to sit across from me and unload the kind of secrets you only share with a stranger. But she stayed longer than most, well long enough to make me think I could’ve made a life as a shrink. In some ways, I guess I already am.
I fixed her a Buck’s Fizz, went a little heavier on the champagne as instructed. She was clearly a woman with a taste for strong and fizzy cocktails... By the second round she was already whispering truths that would never make it past her living room. And honestly, it was better that way.
She told me about her career, her husband, her kids — a whole family waiting at home. And yet here she was… glowing like a teenager, talking about a man who made her feel like a woman again. Not just somebody’s mother, not just somebody’s wife. And yes, you guessed it — not her husband.
I didn’t judge. It wasn’t my job. My job was to keep the glass full and my ears open. But I could see the battle in her eyes, that dangerous edge where fantasy starts looking more real than the life she built.
People think cheating is about bodies. She made it clear it was about survival — about finding a spark after years of routine had turned her into a shadow of herself. She admitted she’d thought about leaving it all behind, but as she simply put it, “summer always ends.”
I just stood there polishing glasses, nodding along, while she talked to herself… through me. Trying her own words on for size. By the time she was done — an hour and three Buck’s Fizzes later — her mind was made up. She slid a $100 bill across the counter like punctuation, then walked out the door with a smile that hadn’t been there when she came in.
And me? I loved every second of it. That’s the part no one tells you about tending bar: sometimes you don’t just pour drinks. You watch someone (re)write their own story right in front of you...
