the right man

Dear Nate,

I remember exactly the day you asked me out on our first date. You took a short break between one show and another and caught a flight. I remember the trip took two hours. We went to a simple restaurant, and that day you even stayed to watch me film a music video. You were so sweet — no one had ever been that way with me before. A part of me died inside every time my skin touched yours, and another part was born every time our eyes accidentally met and we quickly tried to disguise it.

I’ve always been afraid of giving myself to someone. We even talked about it once — how giving ourselves to each other felt so natural and happened so fast that it must be something karmic. Maybe, in another life, I was yours too. I mentioned that a part of me died, and that part was fear — the fear of loving someone died every time your message appeared on my screen. My fear of surrendering completely faded a little more with each secret meeting we had, hiding from gossip columnists who would love nothing more than to expose our private love in poorly written stories. And at the same time, the desire to have you near, to trust you, and to face the vastness of the world with you was born and kept growing exponentially.

To be honest, I never thought someone like me was capable of living this way. I had always been so lonely, fighting battles without a shield, watching my friends marry and have children while I poured my energy into other things. I wish I could trade places with you, just once, so you could see yourself through my eyes.

So, dear Nate — I’ll give you something. It’s no diamond ring; it’s the air that I’m breathing. For us, forever will never be enough. It’s a song we’ll both sing. If you come here and wrap my finger in a blade of grass, I promise I’ll make it last.

I do.
