’Horrible, shitey little things, these.’
Mailli spoke around the mouthful she chewed making her mother chuckle as she glanced over from the dough she was kneading. When her eldest daughter had arrived to help with the morning baking, she’d noted her paler than usual cheeks and bags under her eyes. She’d sat her down at the end of the old kitchen table with a glass of water and a plate of digestives.
‘They’ve gone a little stale then, try a muffin maybe? A scone?’ She watched as Mailli pressed her lips together at the idea. Adeline turned and smiled as Declan walked by and grabbed one from the plate, eating it in two bites and mumbling at how good they were. It earned him a lingering kiss before he left to run some errands for the toff.
When she finally glanced back at their daughter she frowned, seeing a green hue in her freckled cheeks. ‘Mailli… why can’t you eat anything other than digestives, are you ill?’ Her daughter only shook head, eyes on the plate in front of her. Then with a sigh she raised her chin stubbornly. ‘Please don’t tell Da…’
No more baking was done that day.
