There is a place inside each of us, remote and unknown. Hypnotists call it "the lost room."
It isn't on any map of the mind and you can't reach it with logic or intention. It's more like a storeroom, where over the years we deposit everything we don't want to face. The scraps of our unconsciousness.
What gathers there is often unsettling, impure instincts. Thoughts we pretend never crossed our mind, fears we've never dared to name, desires so aberrant we'd rather believe they belong to someone else.
And yet, the lost room belongs to us. It is us.
Every time I guide someone under hypnosis I wonder what waits for them behind that invisible door. Sometimes I wonder what waits for me.
Thing is, the lost room has no exit. It's a place with no way out. And once you glimpse it, you can't pretend it doesn't exist.
