Again

"It happened again"

"What do you mean? What happened?"

She sighed, stabbing at the foam on her coffee to little effect, whispering across the table to her brother. "Another proposal..."

Maxie laughed, grinning back at her. "What, really? Who this time?"

"It doesn't matter," Bonnie replied hastily, "obviously I said no. Why does this keep happening though? I'm too young for all that stuff, isn't that obvious to people?"

"Some people do marry young, you know", offered Maxie, not terribly helpfully. "They just meet The One, and they know, so why wait?"

Bonnie scoffed and pouted. "It's not even been that! I've barely even known these guys, and still they've done the whole "marry me" thing, I don't get it! That's not... you know... very... sensible."

Now it was Maxie's turn to scoff. "Oh my, you want a sensible proposal, drawn up in triplicate, plus and minus columns, mortgages and life insurance plans all bought and paid for", he mocked.

"I do not! I don't want any kind of proposal! I just think that, if that was something you were into, which I'm NOT, there should be a bit more to it, you know? Like, proper love! A meaningful relationship! A shared history! A real, deep connection!"

"Not just an occasional shag"

"Exactly!" She pointed her spoon directly at him now. "Exactly that! It should really mean something! And, well, I've never really had that with anyone..."

"Aw, poor Bonnie, it's so tragic. Woe is you!"

She looked over at her brother, his eyes sparkling with merriment, and couldn't help grinning back at him. "Worst brother ever! Anyway, how's your love life?"
