Dear husband,
I had a lot of trouble sleeping last night. When I woke up after envisioning what was about to happen with Jess, Carver, and the rest of our kids, I decided to stay awake as long as possible—because I knew you would be next. Not that I didn’t know you were actually having fun (you started it, after all), but I was afraid this could happen.
You were my first and best friend to the end. You gave me a life I’ll never forget—one that would be hard to top. So my best shot is... I won’t even try. You gave so much without asking and kept your word: we were together until violent death did us part, and I can’t thank you enough.
I’m sure I’ll keep my word as well—but don’t get me wrong, honey, I’m just not ready to go looking for you in the afterlife.
I feel like giving up right now would be doing exactly what that thing wants. So I won’t.
I’ll honor you, our love, and our family until my last day. And I hope you’ve saved me a seat in hell, right by your side.
For now, let me just say thank you. Thank you for getting on that flight to Madrid, for all the camping trips, for all the kids, for all the husbands, and the love, music and sex we shared with them. And above all, for never letting go of my hand.
