backstory - Minato Yeon

Minato's life began under the shadow of a disintegrating marriage. His parents divorced before his birth, a precursor to the unsettled life that awaited him. In his earliest years, he was raised by his mother, a woman who was often lost in the haze of substance abuse, rendering her emotionally unavailable. Minato's infancy was marked by neglect and the perennial feeling of being an unwanted appendage in his mother’s troubled life.

When Minato was barely two, his father, realizing the detrimental environment the boy was growing up in, fought for and won his custody. This change brought a new sense of belonging to Minato’s life. His father, although struggling to juggle the demands of single parenthood and a broken past, tried earnestly to fill Minato's life with joy and stability.

Growing up, Minato's interactions with his mother were sporadic and strained. She would appear intermittently—sometimes at their doorstep, sometimes inviting Minato over, in attempts at reconciliation that often ended in renewed disappointment. These encounters, instead of healing, only deepened Minato's resentment towards both his parents. He perceived their attempts to connect as insincere, further affirming his belief that he was of little worth to them.

As Minato transitioned into his teenage years, the emotional turmoil of his childhood manifested in rebellion. He became what everyone expected from the child of a broken home—a troublemaker. He knew the dark alleys of the city as well as he knew the back of his hand, often finding himself embroiled in petty crimes and dangerous liaisons.

Despite his tough exterior, Minato grappled with a profound emptiness. Love and affection were concepts as foreign to him as peace had been in his childhood home. He pushed away any attempts at intimacy with a mix of disdain and ignorance, afraid to confront the vulnerability that came with accepting care from others.
