The Box
It started during our daily hide-and-seek session. Nina was the seeker, and Holly and I decided to stick together from fear of getting lost in Nina's humble abode and never being seen again.
We ran for the master bedroom. It was a location we knew well since we had spent most of yesterday trying on Nina's mom's dresses and eating chocolate-covered strawberries.
Holly wore a big hat and stood in the corner pretending to be a lamp while I slipped under the bed to hide. That's when I found the mystery box. Why would adults hide a locked box under their bed? It made no sense.
Once Nina found us, I was the first one to be found, which was kind of insulting since not many people have a giggling lamp in their bedroom. I told the girls about the box. Nina was intrigued like I was, but Holly was nonplussed about it. She explained that there were many locked boxes like that back at home in London.
"What do you think is in it?" I asked Nina. "Look, there are stickers on it. What are those, a peach and an... eggplant? Maybe it's where your mom keeps the vegetables safe?"
Nina frowned. Between her dad and her, vegetables weren't really a valuable currency in their household. "Cookies and pastry, I could understand, but vegetables don't make any sense."
"What do you think, Holly? Holly?" I looked around the room for her and gasped. Wearing an oversized suede robe with distinct chocolate handprints, stood the Strawberry Queen.
"Oh, sorry, your majesty."
Holly beamed. "It's alright. You are forgiven, but now is not the time for mystery. Let us ponder on this box over a few juice boxes and while watching Bluey."
Nina grinned at me. "And that is why she's the queen. Come on! We'll come back to the box tomorrow."
