Nashville was… an adventure. Shocking, I know. You’d think after months on the road we’d have mastered something as basic as “knowing what time it is,” but apparently not. We managed to miss an entire TV appearance because we misread the time zone. A whole hour late — zettai muri. Very professional of us. Grammy-worthy even.
We’re now on a longer break in Chicago, which feels pleasantly calmer than expected. The shows in Nashville, Chicago and Seattle went far better than I thought they would: proper reviews, proper crowds, proper everything. For a brief moment I even thought, “ah yes, maybe we do know what we’re doing.” Sasuga us, I suppose.
But it’s funny how life likes to tap you on the shoulder just when you’ve finally stopped wobbling. I’m fine, of course, or whatever passes for “fine” on tour, but let’s just say the universe has been a bit… theatrical lately. A quiet reminder that nothing ever stays still, no matter how tightly you try to hold it.
As much as I adore my bandmates (most of the time), touring is… lonely. Not dramatic-film lonely, just the quiet kind. I miss home; I miss my favourite onigiri; I miss my “mysterious friend” (you know who you are, probably); I miss looking at Tokyo from Shibuya Sky with a matcha in hand while Low Roar convinces me that life is a contemplative art piece.
During this break I’m also planning the impossible: finally understanding how Gojira manage to sound so astronomically rich using approximately five notes. I don’t get it. I refuse to get it. I am, however, deeply jealous. One day I shall unlock their secret, and on that day the universe should brace itself.
For now, I’ll play my bass, pretend to rest, and hope the next city forgives our chronic inability to read clocks.
